Tools required

1.      Having a good set of screw drivers and spanners will beneficial.

2.      A power drill equipped with a step drill bit – see example below will help for drilling holes in your gate frame for the 4-core cable.

Instead, you can use a normal metal M14 drill bit if you have one of those.

3.      To pull your cable through the pipe of the gate, you have several options available. You can try using medium gauge fencing wire.  This is probably the simplest and cheapest option available.  You can also try using a magnet tied to a piece of string moved on the inside of the pipe with a magnet on the outside of the pipe. DIY electronic retailers and tool stores offer various cable pulling options.  For two examples see the images below – these types of products are typically advertised as “Electrical Cable Pullers”.

4.      To clean or debur holes cut into the pipe of the gate, either use a round file or a deburrer like the one below.

5.      Side cutters or scissors to cut cable to length.

6.       M17 or 5/8th spanners are best for using on the bolts to connect the swivel plate and saddle, and for the U-bolt on the sensor bracket.

7.       An angle grinder or bolt cutters will be necessary where mesh needs to be removed from the gate for the solenoid latch, saddle and swivel plate, and the sensor bracket.

8.       Having a wire stripper to cut insulation off some cables is also necessary. A tool like the one below can be found in any many different hardware, electrical and automotive retail stores. This type of tool is also good for crimping on ferrules to your bare wires.
